What Can I Expect To Have To Pay to Play Lacrosse?

Youth and High School Competitive Leagues

If you plan on playing lacrosse in Cincinnati, for a competitive team (during the spring season), you're going to have to pay some club dues.  Dues range anywhere from  $100 to $500 here in Cincinnati, and are very much subject to parent boards, school involvement, fundraising, and level of play.  The more involved the school is, the less expensive lacrosse is.  Take into consideration, for example, that a school can provide fields, paint, clocks, tables, jerseys (usually old football jerseys, but if they're free, why not?) and more.  Some schools even offer money from the boosters.  This all comes out of the overhead cost of the club.  Fundraising is important - but usually not well done.  There are a million things that a team can do to raise money and lower dues - car washes, programs with ads in them, spaghetti dinners, etc.  Get creative!!  And, of course, the amount of travel involved with the team will change your dues.  Buses can get expensive.  Plan carefully.  The last - but most important - part of dues is the Parent Board.  A GOOD parent board will save a team THOUSANDS of dollars by coordinating fundraising, school involvement, and keeping things organized in general.  In fact, the Parent Board of a lacrosse team is quite possibly the "live or die" factor for the team.  Point is - GET INVOLVED!!!

Off-Season Play

There are a LOT of leagues available for players at any level here in Cincinnati.  Just here at Celtic, we have leagues running almost year round - at Miami Whitewater Forest and Kellogg Park in the summer, at Francis Recreacres in the fall, and at Soccer City through the winter.  Plan on paying anywhere from $50 - $150 (ours are usually $60 - $75) depending on the facilities (indoor leagues are more expensive).

Camps

Camps are a good idea for any level of player, and are generally easy to find - especially for boys.  Cincinnati alone had 6 camps for boys - from the St. X camp to the All-Star camp, there is always something available during the summer.  Plan on $200 - $400 for Cincinnati Camps.

Away camps are a great idea for more advanced players - meet the nation's best University coaches, and BE SEEN by coaches at colleges you may plan on going to!  These camps are usually overnight, and fees range from $350 - $700 depending on the camp.  Popular out-of-town camps have included (but are not limited to) Ohio State, Denison, Camp 205, and Top Gun.

The Wall

It's funny - any good lacrosse player will mention "the wall" when asked about training for lacrosse.  What he or she is referring to... is literally a wall.  But while walls are free - windows certainly are not.  If you want to avoid replacing windows, you might consider picking up a LaxWall - a simple pitch-back that costs between $160 - $200 depending on size.  Having a wall can actually be better than having a friend to throw with - consider that you get an average of 15 - 20 touches per minute with a buddy, and easily 40 - 60 touches per minute on a wall (a touch is a catch and throw).  Using the wall develops "soft hands" with a lot of coordination, and can help you focus on key mechanics, while throwing with a partner usually involves talking about something other than what you're doing (though it is interactive - which has its advantages, too).
